By quantifying carbon emissions associated with packaging production, we empower businesses to make informed decisions that prioritize sustainability without compromising functionality or profitability. However the urgency of sustainable packaging solutions is underscored by recent legislative developments. The European Commission’s proposed rules for 2030 prioritize reducing packaging waste and supporting environmental goals. Moreover initiatives like carbon taxation, pioneered by countries such as Finland in 1990, have gained traction globally. With carbon tax rates varying across nations, it’s evident that environmental responsibility carries economic implications. Moreover, at our production we apply sustainability practices to minimize energy consumption and reduce waste in our operations. Since we aim to minimize CO2 emissions associated with our operations and contribute to a sustainable, green future, together with an independent consultancy company Ramboll we have created a research that shows an environmental impact of our packaging solutions.

As a result of the research, we have performed a calculator to measure and afterwards to assist us to reduce the carbon footprint. A CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) calculator helps Clip-Lok SimPak and our clients to measure and qualify the carbon footprint and environmental impact of the packaging we produce. On top of that, the CO2e calculator allows not only measure the carbon footprint of our packaging solutions, but also to calculate the impact of the associated supply chain activities by calculating the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide emissions associated with their operations.
By facilitating the evaluation of packaging materials in light of carbon emissions, we enable companies to align with evolving regulations, reduce their environmental impact, and enhance their market appeal. Therefore embracing sustainable practices isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a strategic imperative for long-term success.
This plywood box is tailor-made for the highly sensitive aluminum profiles used in the automotive industry. Our solution allows customers to transport aluminum profiles of different lengths. This one-way box fits aluminum profiles of 5 different lengths. The aluminum profiles are protected by ETHA foam that can slide inside a dunnage at the base of the pallet. In addition, the box can be flat-packed, therefore making it easy to store.
We compared the CO2e of this returnable wooden packaging solution to a single-use cardboard box
Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is a measurement of the total greenhouse gases emitted, expressed in terms of the equivalent measurement of carbon dioxide.
The analysis includes all activities of raw material extraction, processing, assembling, and transport until and including Clip-Lok’s factory gate where Clip-Lok’s products are ready to be shipped to their customers.
The climate impact of materials for wooden packaging capable of handling 5000 deliveries is nearly 18 times lower than that of cardboard packaging.
Using cardboard boxes results in an 18-fold difference in climate impact compared to wooden packaging suitable for 5000 deliveries. However, it is necessary to consider the transport impact as well. Since the total impact from transport and materials of CO2 is still 30% less than the amount of cardboard boxes needed to handle 5000 cycles.
Returnable packaging offers not just sustainability benefits but also cost savings for the supply chain.
We conducted a comparison between 125 returnable Clip-Lok boxes, each capable of 125 cycles, and 5000 one-way cardboard boxes.
Our study revealed a 57% cost saving over five years with returnable packaging, encompassing return transport, packaging maintenance, and assembly expenses.
In conclusion, as we navigate the intersection of environmental stewardship and economic viability, Clip-Lok SimPak remains committed to empowering businesses with innovative solutions. Our CO2e Calculator heralds a new era of sustainability in packaging, where every decision is informed by a commitment to a greener, more prosperous future.
Join us in shaping a world where sustainability and profitability go hand in hand.
